The accusation against Sandra Cuevas is a judicial issue: Sheinbaum

The head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, denied that the accusation against the mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Sandra Cuevas, – who was singled out for the crimes of abuse of authority, theft and discrimination – was a political issue, but is a judicial issue that “is in the hands of justice.”
After a control judge ordered the temporary suspension of the mayor’s position, as well as the prohibition of approaching the police officers who denounced her and leaving the country, Cuevas accused a campaign against her, operated by the Morena party and Sheinbaum.

However, the head of government said that such accusations are “absolutely false”, and that the situation of the mayor is not a personal or political issue, but “an essentially judicial issue”.
At Tuesday’s press conference, the president said that the complaint and the measures against Sandra Cuevas originated in the acts she committed against police officers in the capital.
“It is in the hands of justice, it is not an issue that has to do with the government of Mexico City, with the head of government, with anyone who is in the government of the city, it is an original fact that carries a criminal complaint and the decision of a judge,” he said.

When asked about how the coordination of the capital government with the Cuauhtémoc delegation would work, Sheinbaum assured that it will continue as it has been done so far.
“I understand that there has to be a person in charge of the office and there we will continue to coordinate as in any of the other 15 mayors,” he said.
In addition, he informed that they would wait for the sentence of the control judge to determine the situation of the mayor’s office, where according to Sheinbaum, the Constitution indicates that if the holder is out of office for 60 days, before completing two years of his administration, new elections would have to be called.
In February, the Prosecutor’s Office announced that it was investigating Sandra Cuevas, following a complaint filed by two commanders of the auxiliary police of the Secretariat of Citizen Security “for the crime of deprivation of liberty, abuse of authority, theft and what results.”

It was detailed that both elements were physically and verbally assaulted repeatedly by the head of the mayor’s office, as well as by several men who were with her.
The investigation began after Cuevas summoned the auxiliary police to a meeting, to supposedly coordinate the work of reordering informal commerce in the Historic Center, as a result of a dispute of competence that arose over the issue.
Shortly after, the Prosecutor’s Office formally requested to hold an initial hearing to charge the mayor of Cuauhtémoc, whose first call was postponed at the insistence of the holder.
In the second attempt, the control judge imposed three precautionary measures: signing daily assistance, not leaving the country and suspension of activities.
After Cuevas denounced a campaign against him, the capital’s Prosecutor’s Office responded that it “does not carry out any political persecution” and that it was simply complying with the law.
