Homicides down 9.1% in the first half of 2022 compared to 2021

During the first half of 2022, Mexico registered 15,400 intentional homicides, a reduction of 9.1% compared to the same period in 2021, according to official figures presented Wednesday by the federal government.
Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, said that this is an average of 84 murders a day.
From January to June 2019, there were 17,225 homicides (95 per day). In the same period of 2020, 17 thousand 5552 murders (96 daily). Meanwhile, in 2021 there were 16,948 intentional homicides (94 daily on average).

The official explained that intentional homicide maintains a downward trend with a decrease of 13.4% compared to the historical maximum of July 2018, when 3,074 homicides were reported.
During the morning press conference, Rosa Icela Rodríguez said that last month was the June with the fewest murders recorded in the last five years. However, it was the second most violent month of the whole year, with 2,662 intentional homicides, only behind May, when 2,833 were reported.

Six states account for 49% of intentional homicides: Guanajuato, Michoacán, Baja California, Estado de México, Jalisco and Chihuahua.
In the 50 priority municipalities in which a large number of homicides are concentrated, there was a decrease of 14.5% in the semester of 2022 against the semester of 2021. In 34 municipalities there was a decrease of 24% and in 16 municipalities there was an increase of 19%.
June, the month with the most femicides
In June 2022, 89 femicides were registered, the highest figure of the whole year, according to the security report.
In January there were 79 femicides; in February 83;  in March 75; in April 83; and in May 84.
During the first months of the year, 493 femicides were officially counted. In the same period of 2021, 536 were registered.
“The number of femicides in June has decreased 20.5% compared to the historical maximum of August 2021, when 112 were registered (…) We continue to work in coordination with the states,” said Rosa Icela Rodríguez.

Other offences 
Crimes under federal law fell by 25.1% and those committed against health, prosecutors and financiers stand out. On the contrary, those who went up were the patrimonial ones, those related to firearms and explosives and those made against the corporal integrity.
On the theft of hydrocarbon, the secretary stressed that there is a decrease of 91.5%; that is, of the 72,000 barrels per day that were stolen in December 2018, the figure fell to 6,100 barrels, which represents a daily saving of more than 165 million pesos.
As for taking booths, during the year the loss of 9 thousand 106 million pesos has been avoided.
