A Citizen Electoral Reform

Why electoral reform? It is the initial and central question that should be answered in any initiative that seeks to disrupt an electoral system that works well, guarantees democratic conditions and provides political stability, as is the Mexican one. However, the answer to that question is not in the text of the presidential initiative presented on April 28, but in the interpretation of the scope of each of the proposed changes, being, without a doubt, to cancel democracy in Mexico.Framed in an easy rhetoric, this proposal is not the product of a sustained dialogue with various political forces and sectors such as academia, For these reasons, the legislative alliance “Va por México” composed of PRI, PAN and PRD have closed ranks against this authoritarian attempt and convened a true Open Parliament Forum “For the strengthening of Democracy”, in which, After dialogue with experts, former legislators, electoral authorities and civil society organizations, we will build an electoral reform project that does respond to social demands. Citizens demand to stop the interference of organized crime in electoral processes, as well as to punish political parties that dare to nominate criminals; and these are precisely the proposals that the PRI is raising. In the districts and demarcations, people ask us to reduce the number of federal legislators, so we propose to go from 500 federal deputies to 300, of which 150 would be of relative majority and 150 of proportional representation, while reducing public funding to parties and expanding citizen financing. The response to citizen demands implies consolidating the autonomy of the electoral authorities, so the PRI will not vote in favor of any initiative that seeks to violate or disappear it. The legislators of “Va por México” will propose an electoral reform that does solve the real problems that citizens face when casting their vote and that it is respected and complied with without restrictions.
