Susan Segal, President of the Council of the Americas: “This is just another chapter in Chile’s history and I see it as a great opportunity”

Susan Segal is an old friend from Chile. As a banker she landed in the country in the midst of the financial crisis of 1982 and 1983 and chaired Advisory Councils to find solutions. Since 2003 she has been in charge of the Council of the Americas and is considered one of the most influential North Americans in the region and close to the Rockefeller family, founder of the organization.
This week she returns to Chile after 3 years (blame the pandemic) to host another edition of the Conference of Cities, the traditional business meeting organized in partnership with the Ministry of Finance. On the new political cycle that Chile is experiencing, Segal is optimistic: “There was a crisis and Chile resolved it with institutional solidity. It is a spectacular example for the region.”
He acknowledges that Chile has challenges in pensions, health and education that do not reflect the level of economic growth it experienced and adds that Chileans want certain securities. He says Chile is a country that in 40 years has changed dramatically.
In the event next Thursday, which can be followed live by El Mostrador, will be present the ministers of Finance, Mario Marcel, of Economy, Nicolás Grau, and of Energy, Diego Pardow, among others.
Among the topics to be discussed at the conference are Chile’s economic prospects and sustainable growth agenda amid a challenging global scenario.
In addition, the program will include discussions on tax reform bills presented by the administration of President Gabriel Boric, which aim to promote investment, productivity and innovation in the country.
