7 CNDH councilors reject call to transform the INE

Seven of the nine members of the Advisory Council of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) rejected the pronouncement that the autonomous body issued in recent days and in which it called to “transform” the National Electoral Institute (INE).
In a public message, the dissatisfied councilors accused the president of the CNDH, Rosario Piedra Ibarra, of making political interpretations of the general recommendations that they have approved, so they demanded that she not engage in such practice.
“We demand that the president of the CNDH adhere, when referring to the general recommendations approved by the Consultative Council, strictly to the approved language, without political interpretations regarding its content, respecting the literalness of the recommendation because, otherwise, this tool can be distorted and lose efficiency as a mechanism that guarantees human rights,” they said.

The message is signed by Georgina Diédhiou, Tania Espinosa, Adalberto Méndez, Gloria Ramírez, Berardo Romero, Jorge Alejandro Saavedra and Ángel José Trinidad.

The counselors demonstrated after the CNDH asked over the weekend to approve an electoral reform that “transforms” the INE, despite the fact that electoral matters are not among the issues on which it has competence.

In that call, the CNDH used some arguments from general recommendation 46/2022, which urged various authorities to strengthen their independence and promote democracy.

For the dissatisfied counselors, the president of the CNDH exceeded because she made a political interpretation of said recommendation, in order to launch criticism of the INE and even accuse it of “sabotaging” the will of the citizens.
The pronouncement of the CNDH object of the rejection of the counselors was announced while President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his party, Morena, promote an electoral reform that, among other things, changes the INE and disappears the local electoral institutes.
The current president of the CNDH came to office supported by Morena senators and, since she began her administration, has been accused by the opposition and numerous activists of being ignorant of possible abuses by the López Obrador administration.
