Cases of monkeypox reach 2,901; Six deaths investigated

Cases of monkeypox in Mexico reached 2,901 this week, according to the report released Tuesday night by the federal Ministry of Health.
The number represents an increase of 9.3% from the 2,654 cases that had been detected last week.
The agency headed by Jorge Alcocer reported that infections are present in the 32 entities of the country. 

So far, Mexico City remains the one with the most cases, with a total of one thousand 725, followed by Jalisco, with 327; the State of Mexico, with 295; from Yucatan, with 102, and from Quintana Roo, with 85.
Authorities said they are investigating whether the deaths of six people who had monkeypox — five men and one woman — were due to the disease.
“These were people who during medical care had lesions compatible with monkeypox and who after their laboratory study were confirmed. The causes are carefully analyzed by a group of experts in infectology and epidemiology to define if there is a causal association between death and infection by monkeypox virus, “said the secretariat.

The authorities rule out that this disease could cause a large-scale outbreak, because its contagion requires close contact between people. However, they call for precautions.
In this context, groups urge the federal government to deploy extensive prevention campaigns and to buy the smallpox vaccine to be applied among groups with high incidence.
