UN Secretary-General António Guterres at COP27: “The state of the global climate is a chronicle of climate chaos”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned in the opening speech of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (WCMC) that “as COP27 gets underway, our planet is sending a distress signal.”
“The state of the global climate is a chronicle of climate chaos,” he said.

He also remarked that “change is happening with catastrophic speed” with dire consequences for the lives of people and habitats on all continents.
Guterres said the world is “on a highway to climate hell,” adding that “humanity has to make a choice: cooperate or perish. It is either a climate solidarity pact or a collective suicide pact.”
“People and communities around the world must be protected immediately from the growing dangers of the climate emergency, which is why we are fighting hard to achieve universal early warning systems within five years.”
In that sense, to address the climate emergency, he pointed out that “we must act ambitiously and decisively; COP27 must be the place and now must be the time,” concluded the UN President.
