Senate discusses AMLO and Morena’s electoral reform

The full Senate began with the discussion of the electoral reform promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his party, Morena.

The reform proposes changes such as reducing the structure of the National Electoral Institute (INE), shortening electoral processes and new rules for the means of challenge.

Opposition calls for postponement of reform debate
 
Beatriz Paredes, PRI senator, asked to remove the issue from the agenda at noon. It was supported by Dante Delgado, of MC, and by Germán Martínez, of the Plural Group, but the proposal did not prosper.
Alejandro Armenta, president of the Senate and member of Morena, said that the petition should be raised in the turn of suspensive motions, which will be read until after the corresponding opinions are presented.

The discussion is expected to last for several hours.
Among other points, the reform proposes that the 300 district boards of the INE become temporary, that the Executive Secretary of the institute has fewer powers, that federal electoral processes do not begin in September but in November of the year price to an election and that the statements of officials are not considered government propaganda.
The reform has already been approved by the Chamber of Deputies with the votes of Morena and its allies of the PT and the PVEM. However, in the Senate he has not only met with resistance from the opposition, but also with doubts among the Morena bench itself.
Ricardo Monreal, coordinator of the parliamentary group, has said several times in recent days that it is necessary to “clean” the package of modifications, as it has aspects that are unconstitutional.
When asked if that position distances him more from President López Obrador, Monreal – presidential candidate – has responded that he is “on the side of the Constitution.”
