Iran: Those convicted and detained in the Amini protests will be pardoned

On Sunday, Iranian authorities announced that a large number of those convicted and detained during protests over the murder of Mahsa Amini will be pardoned. It was not specified how many people will benefit, but “tens of thousands” are likely to benefit. This was announced by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a statement posted on his website: “I agree to pardon and reduce the sentences of a significant number of defendants in relation to recent incidents or those who have been convicted.” It was also made clear that those detained in connection with the protests will only be released if they sign a “declaration of repentance and a written commitment not to repeat a similar crime.” This comes in the context of the 44th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in February 1979.The protests began over the death of the 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman, Masha Amini, on September 16 in Tehran, after being arrested by the morality police, who accused her of violating the dress code of the Islamic Republic. Human rights groups say more than 500 people have been killed in the crackdown, including 70 children, and four others have been hanged.
