Minister Montes rules out intentionality in forest fires: “One can speculate a lot but the important thing is to contain the fire”

The Minister of Housing and Urbanism, Carlos Montes, addressed the current situation of forest fires that hit the south-central area of the country and assured that, if there is intentionality in the accidents, it would be a “very complex” situation.
In that sense, the secretary of state, who has been acting as a “liaison” minister of the Government in the Biobío region, said that if “if everything that is said were true, that everything is intentional, the truth is that we would be in a very complex situation.”
It should be noted that since the emergency situation began due to forest fires at the beginning of February, different subjects, in various regions, have been arrested by the police for allegedly starting fires. According to Montes, “this has been said a lot, it has been discussed in several meetings. Here there are formal complaints and the institutions have to respond.”
“They have told us that they are working on the different complaints, not only here, in this area (Biobío region), but in other areas. One can speculate a lot and talk a lot about intentionality. The important thing is to contain the fire; on the one hand, and on the other hand the investigations of the institutions,” he said.
At the moment, “there is nothing concrete, no concrete data that would allow us to say that this had the basis of what had been pointed out,” the government authority said.
