Telecommunications in emergencies – El Mostrador

Mr. Director,
Emergencies such as cable theft, or fires in the central and southern part of the country make us think about how critical services can guarantee their operational continuity and / or quickly restore normal operation in such sensitive issues as health and safety, among others, in the event of any eventuality.
The Internet, a fundamental element for critical services to continue operating, has also been affected by this and other contingencies. In one of its cadastres, the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications reported more than 140 affected stations in the area of the fires, impacting connectivity and communication at key moments. It is not the first time that physical dependence on telecommunications has become a weakness, considering the growing theft of copper and fiber optic cable, for example.
A country with the geographical characteristics of Chile should establish policies that encourage the adoption of technologies that guarantee the operability of essential services. In terms of Internet connection, dedicated wireless links are the least affected in emergencies, whether satellite or microwave connections. In addition, they guarantee bandwidth in practically any part of the country, completely dispensing with cables which allows to provide connection even in adverse situations.
The first strategy for the control of these eventualities should be the absolute operational continuity of the services called to guarantee order and restore normality.
