Chamber of Deputies will suspend district week to address security projects after death of police

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Vlado Mirosevic, has confirmed that the district week will be suspended to focus special sessions on legislative security issues. This measure comes in response to the murder of the second sergeant of the Carabineros, Rita Olivares, who died during a robbery procedure in the commune of Quilpué after being shot in the head.
Mirosevic said that the table of the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies is working to agree to the suspension of the district week and have special sessions focused solely on security laws. He added that there has been a willingness of the political sectors of the left and right to make this possible, and that they are working on the days of special session and the projects that will be discussed.
The head of the Lower House lamented the death of the uniformed woman and described the day as “sad for Chile” and “sad for the Carabineros.” Mirosevic sent his condolences to the director general of the Carabineros, the public institution and the family of Rita Olivares for what he described as a “cruel and brutal murder” that the whole country must condemn.
Those who formally made the request were the UDI deputies, Juan Antonio Coloma and Marta Bravo, who demanded that the president of the Chamber, Vlado Mirosevic, suspend the district week and convene special sessions to process a series of bills on security.
“If the government does not want to give urgency to projects that go in defense of the police and the PDI, and in view of the impunity with which criminals act, attacking our police with firearms, it is urgent that we move forward with the initiatives that are in the Security Commission of the Chamber and that have a transversal support to approve them,” lawmakers argued.
Finally, Coloma and Bravo made a harsh call to their official peers “to demonstrate with facts whether or not they are in favor of stopping these acts of violence and give the necessary powers to the officials of Carabineros and PDI to be able to defend themselves, otherwise, the entire citizenry will see that they continue in favor of violence and defend criminals. instead of our inhabitants.”
Senator Manuel José Ossandón (RN) asked the Executive to even convene the National Security Council: “I call on the President of the Republic to summon COSENA, the National Security Council, there he will have technical advice to face the disaster we are experiencing with crime and with the death of carabineros and carabineras.”
From the ruling party, Senator Ricardo Lagos Weber (PPD) said: “May the murder of Sergeant Olivares mark a turning point in the fight against crime. The Senate must advance this week on security projects and especially on giving protection to the police who protect citizens.”
For her part, Senator Alejandra Sepúlveda (exFRVS) also called on her parliamentary colleagues and the Government to suspend the regional week and hold conclave in Congress and “not leave until reviewing, processing and dispatching all bills, motions and messages, which have to do with the fight against crime and organized crime, just as we did to face the Covid-19 pandemic.”
The undersecretary of crime prevention, Eduardo Vergara, addressed the criticism of the Government for filing a criminal complaint against those responsible for the murder of the police officer and not other more exemplary measures. “I fully agree that filing complaints does not necessarily have an impact on our ability to bring a perpetrator to justice,” Vergara said.
The General Director of Carabineros, Ricardo Yáñez, after being asked if he feels supported by the Government, replied that: “We have absolutely the support of the Government, we have never had so much purchase of equipment and material to carry out our police work,” he said.
