Medvedev was consecrated in the Masters 1000 of Miami

In the final of the Masters 1000 in Miami, Daniil Medvedev beat Jannik Sinner 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 35 minutes and thus won his fourth title of the year -counting those obtained in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai-.Three weeks after losing the Indian Wells final to Carlos Alcaraz 6-3 and 6-2, Medvedev redeemed himself with a stunning win over Sinner, a surprise winner for eliminating the first-placed ATP leader in the semifinals last Friday. The fatigue after the feat in Friday’s match, which lasted 3 hours, left notable consequences on the level of the Italian tennis player, who could not show the same energy in the final. Thus, Medvedev took advantage of his rival’s holes, and won his first 12 points on his serve. The Russian went from low to high and, after a tight 7-6 victory in the first set, began to beat his opponent in the subsequent points, getting a 6-3. For his part, Sinner cited a recent illness when referring to his level. “I woke up this morning and I wasn’t at my best, a little sick,” he explained, though he later admitted that “unfortunately I didn’t play well.” Medvedev said: “It was a very tough match, on the hottest day of the tournament. I don’t know if Jannik had an injury or cramps. The conditions were complicated, it was hard for me, but I didn’t want to show it.” The wind chill at the time of the match reached 33 degrees. Likewise, the Russian tennis player pointed out the importance of the tournament. “I hadn’t won such a big tournament for a year and a half, I was shaking a little bit. I’m not afraid of winning, but my hands get a little nervous and it’s harder to get out. I have been able to recompose myself and close the game,” he emphasized. Last Sunday’s stumble, in which Alcaraz showed an overwhelming level and mercilessly punished his rival, was Medvedev’s only defeat in 2023, since so far he is the leader in victories – 29 – and played five consecutive finals.
