Morocco: After Friday’s devastating earthquake, a new earthquake shakes the Marrakech region

A new earthquake of magnitude 3.9 on the Richter scale shook the tourist region of Marrakech on Sunday, where on Friday a strong earthquake caused more than 2,000 deaths and 2,059 injuries. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the new quake occurred at 7.59 local time in a mountainous area located in the south of the Marrakech-Safi region. According to the Europa Press agency, the epicenter was located 10 kilometers deep, halfway between the cities of Marrakech and Agadir.The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Observatory also registered the movement, although it raised its magnitude to 4.5 on the Richter scale. The same agency recorded a total of nine aftershocks of Friday’s landslide of between 2 and 4 magnitude on the Richter scale in the region of Ighil, province of Al Hauz.The earthquake on Friday occurred at 23.11 at a depth of 18.5 kilometers, with epicenter 71 kilometers southwest of Marrakech.The earthquake caused 2,012 deaths and 2,059 injured -1,404 in serious condition-, according to the latest official balance sheet of the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior.
