Twitch launched a new anti-harassment tool for streamers

With the aim of combating online harassment and providing a safer experience to its content creators, the streaming platform Twitch launched a new anti-harassment tool that allows streamers to prevent blocked users from being able to continue watching their live streams. Until now, streamers had the option to block a user, which limited their ability to interact through emojis, comments, and whispers, but didn’t stop the blocked user from continuing to watch live streams. The feature is available in the moderators’ settings during live broadcasts. Streamers will be able to enable this measure by selecting the special button labeled “Prevent banned users from viewing the stream.” Trevor Fisher, Twitch’s senior product manager, announced the arrival of this feature and expressed that it was a feature highly requested by the active community of the platform. However, the blocking tool has a limitation. It only applies to specific user accounts. This means that even if a user is locked, they could still watch broadcasts if they log in from a different account. To address this issue, the platform would have to implement an IP address-based blocking feature, which would prevent anyone sharing a Wi-Fi or data network with a blocked user from accessing the streamer’s content.
