Copa Argentina: there will be VAR in the semi-finals and final

After a series of controversies that stole the attention in the quarterfinals of the Copa Argentina, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) defined that in the next instances – semifinals and final – VAR will be present. Boca Juniors’ penalty shootout win over Talleres de Córdoba, after a 1-1 draw in an entertaining match in Mendoza, gave them a place in the semifinals, where they will face Estudiantes de La Plata. However, the match was distorted by different controversies that took over the night. In the first half, a handball in the area of the Cordoba team was not seen by the referee, so the play continued normally despite the clear penalty. It wasn’t the only event that drew attention in the quarterfinals of the national competition. In the match between Huracán and “Pincha”, controversy took over the stadium when Mariano Andújar took a ball to the edge of the goal line, a play that the entire “Globo” squad claimed as a goal. After repeated requests from different clubs for the implementation of VAR, the AFA finally listened to the complaints and launched the device to have the technology in the next phases. The large number of venues in the first instances made it impossible to implement, as some stadiums did not have the necessary tools to add VAR. With three matches remaining, the AFA finally decided to add VAR as the venues in which they will take place have yet to be defined.
