“There are no bears”: Jafar Panahi’s new film arrives in theaters

Jafar Panahi directs and stars in the film “Khers Nist” (“There Are No Bears”), which will hit theaters on January 18, 2024. Jafar Panahi was born on July 11, 1960 in Mianeh, Iran. He is a director and editor known for films such as “Taxi Tehran” (2015), “Three Faces” (2018), and “Offside” (2006). He has left an indelible mark on Iranian cinematography. His career, not without challenges, was marked by his arrest in 2010, when prominent figures in international cinema advocated for his release. Government restrictions also led to the banning of his films “The Circle” (2000) and “Talaye sorkh” (2003). Despite facing a six-year prison sentence and a twenty-year ban from making films, Panahi persisted. His bravery was rewarded when he won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for “Taxi” in 2015, becoming the only Iranian director with three major awards at major European film festivals. His reflections on the future of Iranian cinema and his personal limitations have resonated deeply with the film community. “‘No Hay Osos,’ his latest opus, promises to be another milestone in his career, exploring the realities of his life and his unwavering love for the art of filmmaking,” they said in a press release.
