Skincare and sustainability: the industry adapts to the concerns of Argentines

Consuming responsibly doesn’t mean not buying anything, it means thinking before you buy. If you are going to buy something, you have to ask yourself what it is made of, where they got those materials from (if they are from controlled sources and that try to mitigate or reduce the environmental impact), look for the product or its packaging to be made of recycled, recyclable, biodegradable material or with renewable products. Living a more sustainable life in beauty goes beyond clean formulas and ingredients. The beauty industry is beginning to transform with initiatives such as the reduction of plastics used in packaging, the creation of recyclable or biodegradable and refillable packaging for all types of products. The environmental issue is of great or considerable concern to 85% of Argentines, according to a nationwide public opinion study conducted by the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa (UADE) and the consulting firm Voices.  This concern is highest among women (89%) and there has been substantial growth in the last year. Along these lines, new solutions are being developed with a focus on sustainability. Neutrogena, for example, has launched a new refill format for its iconic NEUTROGENA HYDRO BOOST Water Gel skincare product, which uses 77% less plastic and is 100% recyclable. In addition, the brand reduced the plastic in the product’s outer packaging by 45%, which is 100% recyclable. The refill makes this product more accessible to consumers and contributes to the well-being of the environment thanks to its reduction of plastic and recyclability. Natura’s products, for example, are made with ingredients from nature. The brand is truly committed to the planet and that shows in every product that has the possibility of “refilling”. There are companies that make it a priority to reduce single-use plastics such as packaging. Refill-Lab is the first Argentinian company to refill cosmetic and household products. You can buy jerry cans and fill small containers to give as gifts. “Our passion for daily care not only involves people but also our planet. We are committed to meeting the needs of our consumers, acting responsibly with natural resources and continuously improving our sustainability efforts through our brands, products, packaging and operations,” explains Josefina Ocampo, Marketing Grouper Manager Skin Health at Kenvue.
