Battaglia revealed the reason for his argument with Almendra

Almost two years after his departure from the position of coach of Boca Juniors, Sebastián Battaglia revealed what was the phrase that triggered his anger with the footballer Agustín Almendra, who called him a “disaster” as technical director in an argument that happened in a training session. Two years ago, in March 2022, Battaglia, then coach of the Ribera club, decided to demote two players to the reserves: Alan Varela and Agustín Almendra. At the time, the technical director stated that the sanction was due to “acts of indiscipline”, although he did not specify further information on the matter. In a preview of the interview he recently did with TyC Sports, he finally revealed what was the phrase that led him to relegate the footballer who today plays for Racing Club de Avellaneda. “As a player you won everything, but as a coach you are a disaster,” was the first sentence that infuriated him. “I’m going to say it because I don’t have a problem. He told me that part, and there’s another part where he tells me: ‘You won four Libertadores to fart.’ Thank goodness, you only won four, ha…”, added the coach. He also explained the reasons for his decision, beyond personal anger at the player’s attitude. “Rules are there to be followed. If not, it’s anything. Everyone does what they want. You’re in a group and you’re part of it. There is a head, a coach and a managerial part,” Battaglia said. After the coach decided to relegate him to the reserves, Almendra did not return to the Boca Juniors first team on a sustained basis, and finally Racing gave him a pre-contract for his transfer in April 2023, so two months later he arrived on a free transfer.
