NATO thanked Argentina and looks forward to “closer collaboration”

In a statement, the undersecretary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Mircea Geoana, thanked Argentina for the request to join as a “global partner” and said he expects “closer collaboration.” Argentina plays an important role in Latin America and I welcome the request to explore the possibility of becoming a NATO partner,” NATO said in an official statement, signed by the undersecretary. Along these lines, Geoana noted that “closer political and practical cooperation could benefit both of us,” explaining that the organization “works with a variety of countries around the world to promote peace and stability.” In relation to the fundamental role of the organization in European security and the intention to add Ukraine in the near future, the NATO undersecretary praised Argentina’s role in “supporting Ukraine with life-saving humanitarian assistance, including food, medicine and support for refugees.” Geoana’s statements stem from the formal request delivered by the Minister of Defense in Brussels with the aim of the country becoming a global partner of the military alliance, after acquiring 24 F-16 fighter jets and their weaponry in exchange for 600 million dollars. On his social networks, Petri responded to Geoana’s publication and maintained that for the country “it is very important to participate in NATO’s Global Partnership Program.” He also added that “yesterday we took the first step of many to make it possible.” The Argentine government began its relationship with the European organization in the early 1990s, but since then it has maintained a limited political dialogue, recently resumed by the Milei government, which hopes to complete the consensus of the 32 allies to become the second American ally of NATO, after Colombia.
