Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez will not go to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with the Argentine U-23 National Team

Goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez was not authorized by Aston Villa to be part of the Argentine U23 National Team and, therefore, will not be able to play in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The English team decided not to allow Martinez to join the youth team led by Javier Mascherano as one of the three older players, since the Olympic Games are not a tournament organized by FIFA and clash with the European soccer calendar. The determination of the British entity prevents the archer from fulfilling his desire to win a gold medal, the only unfinished business in his career after having won the World Cup, the Copa America and the Finalissima in just two years. Despite Dibu’s absence, Mascherano still has two world champions in the U23: Julián Álvarez and Nicolás Otamendi. Rulli would be the candidate to replace Martínez in the Olympic event. The main candidate to replace Martínez is Gerónimo Rulli, a substitute in the recent Copa América. The final decision is up to Ajax, the club that owns his pass. If he obtains permission from the Amsterdam team, he will compete for the position with Leandro Brey, who has been the starter in the last friendlies and in the South American Championship. It should be noted that the former goalkeeper of Estudiantes de La Plata has experience in the Olympic Games, since he was in Rio 2016. On that occasion, Argentina was eliminated in the group stage.
