translated from Spanish: Brunette calls millionaires to join on initiative and pay more tax

Morena’s national leader, Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar, called on “Mexican millionaires” to join the international initiative in which billionaires from different countries ask their governments to raise their taxes, in order to contribute to public programs aimed at tackling the coronavirus crisis.

“It would be very important for some of the dinner-goers with the presidents of Mexico and the United States in Washington and who make up the select group of the great millionaires that exist in the world, to express readiness to strengthen finances and face more successfully the emergency we live in,” said Ramírez Cuéllar, according to a statement issued by his press team.
“Carlos Slim, Ricardo Salinas Pliego, among others should express commitment to strengthen the progressiveness of our tax system, so that more people have and support themselves to reduce the inequality gap in Mexico,” he added.
In his message, the leader of Morena noted that the pandemic has been a major challenge, and that lower government revenues from the social estrangement measures that have been implemented will put strong pressure on countries’ public finances.
It is necessary, he said, to take steps to enable the government to strengthen its incomes, so that it can implement greater actions in support of the population and revive the economy.
“The context we face highlights the need for a progressive and equitable tax system, where those who have the most contribute more to public finances,” he said.
“This becomes more relevant after OXFAM International released the content of a letter where 83 millionaires from 7 countries point to the need for governments to tax large fortunes more, ‘immediately, substantially and permanently,’ in order to have the resources to cope with the effects of the pandemic,” he added.
Mexico suffers from deep inequality, he noted, and the situation is expected to be aggravated by the economic and social effects of the pandemic.
“This is an important opportunity for entrepreneurs who have had a rapprochement with the Federal Government, such as those who accompanied the President of the Republic on his recent visit to the United States on the occasion of the entry into force of the T-MEC, show their solidarity and commitment to the welfare of Mexico and speak out in favor of a progressive tax system, in which those with the most resources contribute more to the country’s public finances, in an act of fairness and tax justice,” he concluded.
