Chile’s state-owned Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, announced on Sunday that it will gradually resume work on its construction projects, which were halted after the deaths of two workers in ten days, starting Monday.
The progressive return will start in infrastructure projects, and then advance “in the coming days” towards those involving underground mining and pits, which remain detained until the review of each one is completed, Codelco said in a statement.

“After the review of security standards and controls, the Vice Presidency of Projects of the Corporation will resume from tomorrow, Monday, July 25, the operational activities of the projects associated with the Andina and Radomiro Tomic divisions,” he said.
Codelco, which is conducting an investigation into the deaths, agreed with its unions to create a joint commission to assess safety issues within the firm.
Mining regulator Sernageomin said last week it found in the incident in Salvador some irregularities in safety standards.
