translated from Spanish: Pat Metheny returns to Chile with his new tour “An Evening with”

Pat Metheny has successfully traveled between free jazz, jazz rock and orthodox jazz. He has also played with such great figures as Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, and Jack DeJohnette. Among his prolific discography are works such as: “Travels” (1982); “First Circle” (with Pedro Aznar, 1984); “Song X” (with Ornette Coleman, 1985); “Still Life” (Talking) (1987); “Question and Anvers” (1989) and “We Live Here” (1995).
A 20-time Grammy Award winner, he has announced the “An Evening with Pat Metheny” tour with a number of dates around the world for 202. He was recently inducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame, becoming the youngest member and only the fourth guitarist (joining Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery).

For this tour, which includes a performance at the Teatro Caupolicán on Saturday, March 21, 2020, Metheny will feature his most constant collaborator since 2000, the drummer Antonio Sánchez. “Antonio is always amazing. He is one of the best drummers of all time and the fact that we have been able to share so much music during these years is something really special for both of us. And I’m very proud of all his recent hits, like “Birdman Score” (Oscar-winning,Nominated Fore-gold And Grammy-nominated) Pat adds: “Being on the “bandstand” with Antonio doesn’t look like anything I’ve ever experienced with another musician. It has the ability to listen and be inside music with a unique intensity. That approach, combined with his otherworldly skills, puts him in his own category.”
Bassist Linda May Han Oh (Malaysia/Australia) is one of the most recurring artists on the New York scene in recent years, playing with many of the most important musicians in the community. Metheny continues: “I love going out to see what the new musicians in town are doing. The first time I heard Linda, she immediately topped my list of candidates has everything I’m always looking for; “good weather”, great notes and a lot of imagination. But most importantly, and that I am always looking at any musician, is a difficult quality to describe, that does not avoid some communicative capacity, not only with the other musicians, but also with the audience. She has that.”
Completing the group is British pianist Gwilym Simcock, one of the most exciting pianists to emerge in the UK in many years. Metheny says: “I first heard about Gwilym on a trip to London, when on a radio station I got their debut album. I heard it and became an instant fan; Gwilym is simply one of the best pianists I’ve heard in a long, long time. It was absolutely amazing so we were able to get to so quickly. I’ve only had that kind of communication and ease of playing with another musician in a handful of times over the years. I’m very excited to have the opportunity to play with him, and I think there’s enormous potential we can develop.”
Tour “An Evening with”
As for what the concerts will look like, Metheny says: “It really could be all or nothing. I’ve written new music that will be released in the early 2020s inspired by this tour, but I also imagine playing only old music one night, or even playing full albums. I like the idea of keeping it open and letting it become whatever it is over the course of the tour. At this stage, I have a lot of music and everything is like a great thing for me, without borders or distinctions between such or that period. With Antonio, Linda and Gwilym, we can make a wide range throughout the tour, and maybe discover what time holds.”
It is the third visit of the distinguished musician to our country, December 1987 at the Central Court of the Estadio Nacional, September 1993 in San Carlos de Apoquindo, recorded on the DVD “Secret Story” and in April 1996 at Estadio Chile.
