TEHERON (AP) — The Iranian authorities have blocked mobile internet service in some provinces for security reasons, the semi-official agency ILNA reported On Wednesday. According to the report, an unidentified official from the Ministry of Telecommunications said the outage can be extended to more provinces and security services deem it necessary.
NetBlocks.org, which monitors cybersecurity and internet governance, confirmed that the mobile internet suffered disruptions in parts of Iran starting Wednesday morning. Opposition groups abroad have called for protests on Thursday, turning 40 days since the anti-government demonstrations, which tripled the price of gasoline.
In the midst of the protests, the government left the country without internet for more than a week.
According to ILNA, the outage this time was verified in Kurdistan, Alborz and Zanjan provinces, as well as in the city of Shiraz.Tehran has confirmed that some demonstrators were killed during the protests, but never gave a figure. Amnesty International says more than 300 people were killed in the protests and authorities arrested more than 7,000.
