translated from Spanish: The first asphalt road with plastic is inaugurated in Mexico

Guanajuato. – The first shed worldwide created partly with recycled plastics was inaugurated in the state of Guanajuato by a group of different companies with the support of the Ministry of Communications and Transport.
The track links the towns of Irapuato and Cuerámaro, and consists of 4 kilometers in which more than 1.7 tons of post-consumer plastic, equivalent to 425,000 flexible plastic packaging, said the chemical company Dow.
This firm was responsible for the development of modified asphalt together with its Vise, Surfax, Lasfalto and Omnigreen alliances.
“This new technology not only offers a possible solution to the management of plastic waste, but also extends the life in road theory by up to 50% versus conventional asphalt,” Dow said in a statement.
“The advantage they can use on any type of road, not just high-performance products, so this can extend the life of any asphalt road”
Paula Sans, MANAGING Director of Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics in Mexico, highlighted the use of plastic materials in a circular economy model, in which they can be used on more than one occasion.
“Demonstrating that roads made from high-performance modified asphalts using recycled plastic material can be obtained is a step forward in developing applications based on a circular economy business model and even providing a solution to growing concerns about plastic steering,” Sans said.
Dow, he added, has in mind to create more pilot tests with the use of modified asphalt to be able to apply this technology on a large scale.
