Mota-Engil Mexico, in agreement with China Communications Construction Company, Gavil Ingeniería, Eyasa and Grupo Cosh, won the tender to build the first leg of the Maya Train.
By videoconference, the National Tourism Development Fund (Fonatur) reported that this first stage corresponds to the palenque, Chiapas, Escárcega, Campeche section.

The amount that the companies that will receive the consortium is 15 thousand 538 million 133 thousand 56.79 pesos.
The international public tender states that the winning consortium will build the platform and via the Tren Maya, supply of materials and elaboration of the executive project.
Existing tracks of the Chiapas-Mayab railway will also be rehabilitated and improved.
The stretch won by Mota-Engil Mexico is approximately 227 kilometers.

According to Fonatur, the winning consortium was chosen after analyzing the 14 proposals registered since April 2.
Experts from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) concluded that the Mota-Engil Mexico-led partnership represented the best value for money.
The election process was monitored by the Secretariat of the Civil Service (SFP).
“This consortium complied with legal and administrative requirements, as well as has the required technical capacity and expertise and has the requested financial capacity,” fonatur said.

Portugal’s Mota Engil was in charge of the construction of the Siervo de la Nación highway, one of the summit infrastructure projects of former governor Eruviel Avila in the State of Mexico.
This project presented delays and modifications that doubled the total cost. In addition, the concessionaire increased the toll price so that Mota Engil will recover its returns.
According to Fonatur, the construction of the first five sections of the Maya Train will generate about 80 thousand jobs in the remaining year 2020 for the region of southeastern Mexico.
The Tren Maya is one of the projects of President López Obrador whose construction continues even though Mexico is in health contingency and Phase 3 by the COVID-19 pandemic.
