President Sebastián Piñera, unveiled this day, issued a decree that will allow the increase of the oversight powers of municipal officials and, that the state will financially support local governments with resources of approximately $235,920 million.
The money injected into municipalities will be distributed in $154 billion, intended to finance the loss of revenue from deferment on contribution and patent payments, in addition to an additional injection of resources of $80.960 million.
The contribution, the President said is “something that municipalities need to do their job, but also municipalities are going to have to tighten their belts. We’re all going to have to adjust the belt, the government with a plan of austerity that’s going to hurt, but that’s necessary.”
Piñera also said that the delivery of resources, adds to that that which has been made to municipalities through the Ministry of Health, for $113 billion.
“We are facing very difficult times and there are no easy solutions, but it is required that mayors and government act with sensitivity, empathy and understanding with what our compatriots are experiencing, but with sensitivity, not with improvisation, nor populism, or demagoguery. In this, mayors and government we are one team, we have an enemy: the coronavirus, and a vision, that Chile and the Chileans can face the coronavirus pandemic and the social crisis of the recession,” the President said.
In his speech, the Representative also requested Congress “not to keep the beneficiaries of the Emergency Family Income waiting”, after the Senate dispatched the initiative, but with no mechanism or amount for payment.
