DC Deputy Gabriel Silber, together with Daniel Verdessi and Víctor Torres, reiterated its location to the Government to decree total quarantine in the Metropolitan Region.
“We are experiencing situations similar to that of Spain from an epidemiological point of view and if no further action is taken, we will no longer talk about the Battle of Santiago, but of its disaster,” said Deputy Silber, after making an inspect visit to the Hospital de San José, together with other parliamentarians and mayors of the metropolitan region
In this regard, Silber added that “today at the Hospital San José we see the collapse, it is one of the most demanded of the MRI, the worst has arrived, critical beds, fans are missing, patients are being referred to other points of the network, if this continues to escalate, as expected for the next two weeks, the consequences will be disastrous. In the north and the Great Santiago the situation is really critical and this has to be said clearly. We all know the conurban condition of the Metropolitan Region, we can no longer continue with the policy of trial and error, and then have to reverse measures or add others. It is today and now that we must act with more drastic measures. For quarantines to be effective, an absolute forty is required throughout the urban MRI fabric.”
“Five million santiaguinos will enter the process of forty from this Friday, but this will not work if the measure is not absolute and categorical for all. Transit and connectivity between communes in the metropolitan region makes efficient quarantine impossible. We ask the authority to reconsider and not to be carried away by rather economic prioritization. The situation is serious,” he said.
In this regard, The Deputy Daniel Verdessi, noted that the situation in Santiago “today equals what happened in Spain, with a high population density; if we have today’s cases – 1,300 and 1,500 cases per day – in 15 more days there will be a flow of 75 daily patients to mechanical ventilation and that will collapse the health system. It’s now when quarantines need to be increased. We can’t give erroneous messages, Today we are coming to the critical moment and it is where the whole health system is tested.”
Finally, Deputy Victor Torres said that “we cannot wait for later when the level of contagion is much more difficult to control, precisely because of the effect it has on populous, vulnerable communes that are not now part of quarantines and in the surrounding regions. For example, we have more than 50% of cases in the Valparaiso region in the province of San Antonio and we have failed to get the authority to apply stricter measures to prevent, for example, the transfer of people from the metropolitan region to our area. Therefore, what happens today in Santiago not only incests the Santiaguinos, but the surrounding regions. That is why the Government must declare forty in the region.”
