Former “Glee” star Lea Michele apologized for being “unnecessarily difficult” on the set of the music TV show after a co-star accused Michele of making her time “hell.” Michele issued a statement saying that while she did not remember any incidents or judge anyone for her background, she regretted it and blamed her privilege and “immaturity.”
“I clearly acted in a way that hurt other people. Whether it was my privileged position and perspective that made me perceived as insensitive or inappropriate at times or if it was just my immaturity and I being unnecessarily difficult, I apologize for my behavior and for any pain I have caused,” he said. The apology came two days after former co-star Samantha Marie Ware accused Michele of “traumatic microagressions that made me question a career in Hollywood.” Michele is white and Ware is black.
After Ware’s indictment, the food kit company HelloFresh announced that it would break its partnership with Michele, saying “We are discouraged and disappointed to learn of recent claims about Lea Michele.” The controversy began when Michele tweeted a comment about the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white officer pressed his knee on his neck while begging for air in Minnesota.
Michele tweeted his support for the Black Lives Matter movement and said police violence against blacks must end. Ware responded by tweeting in capital letters that Michele had made her first television job a “living hell.”
In her statement, Michele noted that she will soon be a mother and tried to give a hopeful note.
“I heard these reviews and am learning, and while I’m so sorry, I’ll be better in the future for this experience,” he wrote. “We can all grow and change and I’ve definitely used it these last few months to reflect my own shortcomings.”
