translated from Spanish: Up to 5 years in prison: Piñera announces increased sanctions against firefighters

President Sebastián Piñera highlighted this Sunday the enactment of the law that tightens sanctions against people who assault firefighters during the course of their work. The initiative provides firefighters with greater protection for the development of their fundamental work for the safety of citizens.
“Chilean Firefighters have been present in each and every circumstance and time when Chile needed them,” the President said at an event in Plaza de la Constitución and where he was accompanied by the First Lady, Cecilia Morel; Interior Ministers Gonzalo Blumel; General Secretariat of Government, Karla Rubilar; Of Housing, Felipe Ward; National Goods, Julio Isamit.
“It is an institution that deserves our appreciation and our gratitude,” said the Mandate, who added that “we want, today, to take a very concrete step forward and to enact a law that will allow them to have the protection and security they need and deserve.”
For serious injuries, the penalty is increased from 541 days to 3 years, to 3 years and 1 day up to 5 years. Meanwhile, for less serious injuries, the penalty is increased from 61 days to 540 days, up to 541 days to 3 years.
Thus, the penalty is equal to that of other serious offences of the Penal Code such as injuries committed in the context of domestic violence, when executed against a child under the age of 18 or against an adult or person with disabilities for those entrusted with their care.
The law is part of a government commitment to the protection of various public officials such as health officials, teachers and police.
“I end by saying, with emotion, to all the Firefighters of Chile, thank you, thank you very much for your commitment, for your bravery, for your dedication, for your love for Chile and for your love for your compatriots,” said the Head of State, who was also accompanied by representatives of the fire brigades, commanded by the institution’s national president, Raúl bustos and the regional president Claudio Bustamante.
