translated from Spanish: 50% of health personnel had or have 3 or more sleep disorders

Since its arrival in March, the Covid-19 pandemic has hit the country hard and one of the most affected groups has been the area of health. The constant danger of contagion has been added long working hours, stress and few hours of rest that have had negative effects on their sleep quality.
In fact, in the middle of the year the sleep medicine specialist center, Clínica Somno, paid free care to health workers to detect and treat sleep-related problems. The result? Half of patients had three or more diagnoses for sleep disorders, 35% two diagnoses and 15% one. I mean, they all turned out to have at least one problem.
“The situation faced by health workers these months increases the likelihood of sleep disorders and constitutes them as a risk group for these conditions. These occur mainly because they have off-phase working hours, affecting the circadian rhythm that is controlled by exposure to ambient light,” explained Clinic Somno neurologist Dr. Alvaro Vidal.
The post-consultation study during June and July released that 85% of patients affected in their sleep quality are women and 72% are performing night shift work. At the same time, the main occupations were nursing and nursing technicians (65%), while the most common diagnoses in all the subgroups analyzed were heart rhythm disorders, insomnia and bruxism. In addition, of the health workers they consulted, 85% work in the public system and 43% have already been infected with Covid-19.
