Presentation report “Youth in the Spotlight: Violence, Discrimination and Stigmatization in Latin America and the Caribbean”

What role does violence play in the lives of young people? That was the central question that guided the research conducted by Public Space with the support International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and whose main findings are present in the report “Young people in the spotlight: violence, discrimination and stigmatization in Latin America and the Caribbean”
The source of this report dates back to 2017. That year, in the context of the research that gave rise to the book “Millennials in Latin America and the Caribbean: work or study?”, more than 60 focus groups were made with young people from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Haiti, Mexico, Paraguay and Uruguay, in order to find out what their educational and work aspirations were, and what were the supports they had and the obstacles they faced to realize them. During the conduct of these interviews, violence in all its forms – such as physical, structural and symbolic violence – appeared in a cross-cutting way revealing itself as a determining factor in the life trajectory of young people. This forced a rereading of the data collected in order to question the role that violence plays in the lives of young people and the impact of violence on the social cohesion of the region.
The main results of the research will be presented by Eleonora Nuun, public space researcher, in a virtual launch, the next Tuesday, October 27 at 11:00 a.m. (Chile). In addition, the instance will have the presence of Carolina Robinho IDRC, Fidel de Rooy Flacso Costa Rica, and comments from Martin Hopenhayn, professor and researcher at Diego Portales University, and Celia de Sola, co-founder of the NGO Glasswing International.
The transmission will be made through the Public Space YouTube and you can confirm your attendance Here.
