Nearly six months after the release of PlayStation 5, Sony will release the first major update for the console, which will add up new features and expand some of the available options. Considering that the big problem with next-generation consoles is storage, it’s good news that the main novelty of the update is the ability to move PlayStation 5 games to an external USB storage device (whether it’s a hard drive or a pendrive). Of course, considering that next-generation games are thought to take advantage of the benefits of new SSD devices, it won’t be possible to run the files from an external disk, but it will save users a lot of headaches by avoiding them having to delete and download the games when they need the space.

“It’s faster to reinstall PS5 games from extended USB storage than to redownload or copy them from a disc,” highlights the announcement, which also clarifies that updates available for games stored on an external disc will be downloaded automatically, so they can run immediately. In addition, if the game allows it (such as the Call of Duty series) it will be possible to install certain game modes on the internal disc, and keep the rest in external storage. The update will also introduce new features, particularly one that allows you to share games with friends who don’t have a PlayStation 5. From now on, users of the new console will also be able to share their games with those who have a PlayStation 4, move control of the game to them, and even play in remote co-op mode.

“PS5 console users can have their friends on PS4 consoles see their game screens or even test PS5 games through Share Play, and vice versa,” explains the announcement. “Options include sharing the screen with a friend, virtually handing over control to a friend, or handing over a second control also virtually to play titles together in co-op mode.” In addition, there are several improvements to the user experience, such as changes to the Game Base menu that provide access to relevant features and content, the option to disable in-game chat or mute some participants, early download of game updates when available, and modifications to the trophy system and game library. But not only will the console receive an update: the PlayStation app will also receive new features, some very interesting ones such as the possibility to change the online state of the console and in the future the company promises that it will allow you to join a multiplayer game directly from your phone and delete games from there as well.

“Recently, we added the ability to save products to a wish list, receive notifications when your friends are connected, and change the online status of your console,” the announcement says. “In the coming weeks, we’ll offer even more features, such as joining a multiplayer PS5 session from within the app, managing PS5 console storage, comparing trophy collections with friends, and sorting and filtering products displayed on PlayStation Store.” The PlayStation 5 update will be available starting tomorrow.
