Mexico.- The Minister President of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), Arturo Zaldívar, said that he will not allow him to be used as a “political instrument” refusing to rule on the transitional article included in the Organic Law of the Judiciary approved by both Chambers of the Union Congress. He made it clear that “the Division of Powers is not defended by tuitazos.” The reforms were harshly criticized by the opposition parties to Morena, as well as by various sectors of Mexican and foreign society, who warn that it may be a “coup d’etre” to Mexico’s third power and, in turn, proof of president Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s term of office.

In an interview with El Universal, Zaldívar Lelo de Larrea reiterated his stance of not ruling on the validation of the extension of his term in the Supreme Court and the Council of the Federal Judiciary as many officials have urged him to do. Read more: WARNs PAN that AMLO is leading Mexico to a dictatorshipIn this sense, he stressed that if he had spoken in relation to the article Tenth Transitional Third presented by a senator of the Green Ecological Party of Mexico (PVEM) at the last moment such action would have constituted an authentic intrusion into the Legislative Power.
He strongly assured that for all those who have urged him to “take sides in the partisan arena” and thereby “add his voice to that of a sector of society,” that will not happen, since, he emphasized that he will not lend himself to be held hostage to those who want to turn “judicial independence into a political weapon” by asserting that it will not allow it to be used as a “political instrument.” It went ahead that it would be up to the SCJN plenary to decide and rule on the approval of the extension of its office. It stated that it would not be present in the discussion and vote of ministers. In doing so, he was confident that the other jurists would resolve the issue with responsibility and seriousness. He added that reforms to the Law on the Judiciary democratize constitutional justice, “strengthen public advocacy” and also “energize the judicial career to create a new judgement profile” and thereby confront corruption and nepotism. It was not known about the reservation submitted by the legislator del Verde and that, as such, it had not had the opportunity to engage in a dialogue on this issue with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
