translated from Spanish: FGR denies political persecution against Ildefonso Guajardo

The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) rejected that there is a political persecution against Ildefonso Guajardo, former secretary of economy in the six-year term of Enrique Peña Nieto, linked to trial for his probable responsibility in the crime of illicit enrichment.
“The claims of Mr. Ildefonso G, and his lawyer, that the case smacks of political persecution, and that they have not been given access to the evidence, are absolutely false,” the agency said in a statement.

He explained that the complaint was filed by the Secretariat of the Federal Civil Service, before the FGR, on October 12, 2020; and on March 8, the defendant was made aware, “granting him access to all the evidence provided, which has continued, permanently, until the day of the hearing.”
He indicated that the main accusation refers to an account of the defendant abroad, with a balance of $8,169,639.00 pesos, “amount that he claims, which comes from the repudiation he made in 2014, of half of a property that was bequeathed to him and his sister; and, in this regard, he delivered the writing on that subject in which his half does not correspond, in any way, with the amount he claims to have deposited for that origin.”
Likewise, the statement details that the defendant has been asked to prove the origin of this inconsistency, without having done so, so the only option of the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPF), was the judicialization of the case.

“Already at the hearing before the Control Judge, the judicial authority again gave him the opportunity to provide the aforementioned evidence and also to request in his favor the corresponding procedural postponement; and none of those options was taken into account by the defendant.”
The FGR obtained from the Control Judge attached to the Federal Criminal Justice Center based in the North Penitentiary, in Mexico City, the link to the process. He added that the former federal official will have to sign periodically and cannot leave the country.
According to ministerial authorities consulted by Animal Politico, the amount of Guajardo’s alleged illicit enrichment amounts to 2.5 million pesos.
Ildefonso Guajardo said yesterday that this accusation has a political background and that he can prove all the deposits and purchases for which he is accused.
