The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) will call to participate in the popular consultation on August 1, in order to create a commission for truth and justice for the victims.
In a statement, the EZLN said that it will seek to win the “yes” to the question of whether or not something should be done to fulfill the right to truth and justice of those who have been victims of the actions and omissions of the Mexican State.
He said that if the opposition parties resist the referendum, it is because they fear what may result from it.

“They are terrified that the victims will recover their demands from the dastardly and perverse use of their pain by the far right. Because pain should not be electoral business, and less for purposes as as returning to the government who are some of the main perpetrators of the violence and who previously only engaged in accumulating pay and cynicism, they explained in the statement published on their website.
The first popular consultation will be held on 1 August. This was promoted by the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The question to which the citizens will have to answer yes or no is the following: “Do you agree or disagree that the relevant actions should be carried out in accordance with the constitutional and legal framework, in order to undertake a process of clarification of the political decisions taken in recent years by the political actors, aimed at guaranteeing justice and the rights of potential victims?”
Specialists explained to Animal Politico in this note that the consultation, with the right focus and citizen impulse, could lead to an effort to create mechanisms such as truth commissions, which inquire into the past of impunity in the country to try to repair the damage to victims.

They added that for this reason the National Electoral Institute (INE) – in charge of conducting the consultation – “is doing everything possible so that the consultation fails, because it knows that it also has its share of the crime because of its exclusive policy for light and urban skin.”
“You have to go in, not looking up, but looking at the victims. (…) This is in order to start, independent of those at the top, a mobilization for a Commission for Truth and Justice for Victims, or whatever it is called. Because there can be no life without truth and justice,” the EZLN concludes.
