translated from Spanish: Excessive internet can affect development in children: IFT

Mexico.- The great advance of technology and the marketing at more reasonable prices of smartphones and tablets have decreased the average age of their consumption, unleashing the possibility that minors present developmental problems when overexploited. This was warned by the Federal Institute of Telecommunications through a study where it was added that both language, motor skills, learning and the ease of solving logical problems can be affected in children and adolescents by the consumption of audiovisual content. The IFT study mentions that the dynamics of coexistence today have changed, as children and adolescents interact digitally to meet needs such as a sense of belonging and acceptance. This limits the development of skills such as conflict resolution through lived experiences, a topic closely related to the construction of personality, exploitation of capacities and self-esteem. Other risks that minors run when having an unlimited interaction in social networks is having access to content not suitable for all audiences, promoting hypersexualization in new generations.

In addition, interaction through social networks involves meeting empty needs such as getting “likes”, meeting new standards of appearance, socioeconomic status and others that are promoted in entertainment such as series, movies, music and infuencers.
