SPF assumes oversight of CIDE; is an ‘act of bullying’: students

Around 1:00 p.m. on Friday, the Federal Protection Service (SPF) assumed the surveillance of the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE) in replacement of the private service, as announced by the director José Antonio Romero Tellaeche.
The Santa Fe headquarters was attended by Alfonso Fernández Ruiz, appointed by Romero Tellaeche as coordinator of Administration and Finance of the center with the aim of presiding over the security service instead.
Although he tried to enter the CIDE to raise the record-reception, the students who have taken the facilities since November 29 prevented him.

At first, only a couple of women members of the SPF were allowed to enter in the company of representatives of the Human Rights Commission (CNDH), as well as Amnesty International Mexico.
According to Fernández Ruiz, the guard of the center will be in charge of seven women and who will remain unarmed.

After the entry of this first commission to review the conditions of the research center, the students read a position in which they reproached that the CIDE has become a research center guarded by the federal force.
“34 days ago, Dr. (María Elena) Álvarez Buylla illegally imposed Dr. Romero in a position that today allows him to make the irresponsible decision to turn our house, the CIDE, into the first educational institution guarded by the Federal Protective Service. An organization created to protect strategic facilities with a long history of human rights violations,” the students said.
Given this fact, they added, either by legal means or through the movement led by Dr. Romero Tellaeche will leave the position of director of CIDE.
“The ultimate proof of Dr. Romero is the act of intimidation that he executes today. For the next two years the student community will be monitored by personnel authorized, according to their own protocols, to use lethal force. There is no doubt: Dr. Romero will go via the courts or via student mobilization. It is impossible for such anything to run any academic institution. Dr. Álvarez Buylla’s reluctance to request her resignation only Aviña to prolong the conflict,” they added.
The seven elements of the SPF entered the facilities in a staggered manner. The last three elements entered around 2:15 p.m.

Present at the change of surveillance, Amnesty International stressed that the decision to have elements of the SFP within the CIDE is a risk factor for the full exercise of academic freedom.
“With the measure initiated today, CIDE becomes one of the few academic institutions in the country that is protected by a state police force, which directly affects the principle of inviolability of the academic space established in the Declaration of Inter-American Principles on Academic Freedom and University Autonomy,” said Edith Olivares Ferreto, Executive Director of Amnesty International Mexico who accompanies the process of changing surveillance at CIDE. Santa Fe.
They also reiterated the request to the director of CIDE to reconsider the presence of the SPF in that institution.
Amnesty International will remain vigilant about respecting the human rights of people who have exercised their rights to protest, free demonstration and peaceful assembly at CIDE facilities,
