After 20 years promoting a space for creation and exhibition with a focus on dance, promoting training activities and socio-cultural reflection, promoting new audiences and the link with the community, Espacio Vitrina has established itself as an alternative cultural room in Santiago and a benchmark for dance in the national environment.
In January 2022 “Excuses for a trip” will be trained, within the framework of the 20 years of Espacio Vitrina and as part of the XI Santiago Off International Festival. It is a new assembly of the Collective La Vitrina -with more than 20 works to its credit-, a group that articulated this space in 2001 and that since then it maintains thanks to the continuous self-management and collective collaboration.
Under the direction of Magnus Rasmussen, the staging speaks of the possibility of experiencing a journey that is not anchored in a narrative or continuity. “From this journey arise bodily states and relationships of a collective that is anchored in dance, but also in their trusts, affections and intimacies. It speaks of the constant tension and relaxation of our relationships and the desire for enjoyment and the affective as a need to approach and contain ourselves from sensitive encounters that develop and mutate in their insistence, “says the director.
As for creative work, the company is in constant reflection, questioning and transformation. “This time we do it from a single perspective and look, while remaining collective. The power and complicity of the group is reinforced, it becomes more versatile and playful, lively. He insists on his language that involves touch, affections and bodily poetics,” adds Rasmussen.
The assembly reunites the company in person, after premiering the digital pieces in pandemic “Solxs en plural” (2020) and “Re-arme” (2021), which arise as a reflection from the reconstruction of the collective before the imminent closure of Espacio Vitrina. “In recent years we have been in constant struggle to sustain this space in the midst of instability and job insecurity as a result of the financing crisis that the cultural sector is going through. As managers and artists we continue to push and persist, independent of the government of the day, in generating state cultural policies that give us security, because performing artists do a fundamental job for the cultural development of our country, “says Exequiel Gómez, general coordinator of Espacio Vitrina.
Review
A journey that occurs as a pretext for that moment in which the intimacy of the scene slows down time, the lights brush our tired bodies, the music remembrances our stories and the meeting of our gazes strips the weight of the chosen trip.
We relate deeply without appearances or burdens, seeking and wishing to meet before an other, in listening and dancing gaze, generating possibilities of distant and intimate approaches, from collapse, containment and impulse, to create spaces of temporary permanence. The action of mobility transforms us from the surface with its connections almost impervious to body friction, to an invitation to dance, where we find our relational world and the excuses to continue the journey.
