The boy who fell into a well in Afghanistan died

Haidar, the six-year-old boy who fell into a dry well in eastern Afghanistan three days ago, was found dead on Friday by rescue teams. Sadly, baby Haider was separated from us forever. Our country today is once again hosting a great tragedy,” Abdullah Azzam, secretary to Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar, wrote on Twitter. “May Allah grant patience to all the Afghan people and especially to Haider’s family,” he added. Rescuers who worked at the scene managed to drill a large stone that obstructed the road and approach the cavity in which the child was trapped. There, they found that the child was alive, but that his state of health “was not good.” Taliban government authorities, construction companies and other citizens worked against the clock for more than 46 hours to rescue the six-year-old boy, although the scarcity of mechanical resources made the operation difficult. Faced with this delay, several householders gathered several supplies for the child, such as water and cookies, which they lowered through a cable that connects the surface with his location, along with a mobile phone so that his father could contact him. A video shared on social media shows part of the conversation between the firstborn and his son. “Son please don’t cry, I send you the phone and water, please don’t cry,” the father tells a heartbroken Haider, who asks him to come down and rescue him. Also on social networks there are messages in which they compare this accident with the case of the Rayan child, rescued lifeless after almost 100 hours at the bottom of a well in Morocco. This event occurred in the midst of a deep economic crisis in Afghanistan, so that provincial governments have fewer and fewer resources to deal with emergencies or basic needs of the country. Most wells are built in rural areas to cope with drought or to grow poppies in areas where water does not reach, and they do not have cover to prevent the fall of animals or people. The most recent case happened last year, when a child fell into a well in the southern province of Helmand. After several hours of rescue operations, the child was taken alive from the hole, but died shortly after in the hospital.
