Full-Time Schools will continue in Mexico City: Sheinbaum

Although the Full-Time Schools program disappeared at the federal level, it will remain in Mexico City to support students and their families, announced Friday the head of the capital’s government, Claudia Sheinbaum.
The local president said that the operation of this program will continue with its own resources — she did not detail the amount — and in coordination with the educational authorities of the federal government.
“We are going to keep the Full-Time Schools in the city. We are working with our own resources. Obviously, the Ministry of Public Education participates, because the most important thing is the teaching staff. We have already spoken with the Ministry of Public Education and particularly with the Federal Educational Authority,” he said at a press conference.

According to Sheinbaum, in Mexico City there are 500 campuses in the Full-Time Schools program and about a thousand with so-called extended days.
The head of government said that the educational aspects necessary for the program to continue will be addressed by the SEP. What is related to the offer of hot food to the students will fall on the capital government, which plans to give the resources directly to the mothers and fathers.

Program details
The Full-Time Schools program became operational in 2006. The government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which began in December 2018, initially indicated that it would maintain it, but it was taking away resources until it recently disappeared.
It transferred those resources to its La Escuela es Nuestra program, focused on the attention of educational infrastructure. However, the Superior Audit of the Federation (ASF) detected in its review of the Public Account 2020 that there is no clarity on the destination of one out of every two pesos of the budget that was assigned to it.
The disappearance of Full-Time Schools has drawn criticism. Civil organizations and parents point out that it was a well-evaluated program that had helped improve the academic performance of students.
