Minister Orellana pledges to do “short- and long-term work” over allegations of sexual harassment on public transport

This day, the Minister of Women and eg Antonia Orellana, issued a statement referring to the constant complaints made by students, women and girls through social networks, where they state that they have been victims of aggression and intimidation in the space and public transport that is part of the routes aimed at educational establishments.
Orellana said he was taking action on the matter, welcoming and systematizing the complaints. “We want you to know that we are in the process of systematizing these complaints together with the Undersecretariat for Crime Prevention, the Public Ministry, the metro, the mayor’s offices, and also with the Ministry of Transport and Education.” One of the first steps is to identify the main sources of public insecurity.
Orellana’s statements are part of this new wave of visibility of situations of gender violence. Recall that during March, students denounced and demonstrated against different instances of sexism within the establishments and then, in the metro stations.
Six days ago the metro adopted new measures, especially related to the allegations of sexual harassment and kidnapping in the Los Héroes Metro: a control and monitoring was activated by Carabineros and PDI personnel throughout the network through more than five thousand cameras.
However, according to the students, in the days following the implementation of these measures, there continued to be attempts at kidnapping, violence and abuse.
