Church calls for repeal of abortion and support “march for life”

The Primate Archdiocese of Mexico called on the faithful to participate in the ‘March for Life’, to ask for the repeal of abortion in Mexico City and the entities where it is being decriminalized.
Through a statement, the Church indicated that the movement ‘Steps for Life’ summoned him and invited him to gather “the largest number of people” from his community to participate in the march on May 7.
“As every year, the promotion of a culture and spirituality in favor of life and dignity requires being attentive, present and active as pastors and faithful,” says the document, signed by the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese, Hector Mario Perez Villareal.

The march will demand that abortion be repealed in the Mexican capital, as well as in the other entities where it is being practiced, and that conscientious objection be guaranteed for health personnel.

It will also be requested that there be public policies for pregnant women in vulnerable situations, so that with this – the document writes – discrimination against them is eliminated.
However, these petitions go against the criteria approved last year by the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), with which it declared unconstitutional the criminalization of abortion for women and people with the capacity to gestate.
The ministers invalidated three articles: Article 196 of the Criminal Code of the State of Coahuila, which imposed a penalty of up to three years in prison on a woman or pregnant person who had an abortion; article 198, which prevented women from being assisted by health personnel during a voluntary abortion; and 199, which criminalized abortion and limited the possibility of terminating pregnancy in case of rape, insemination or artificial implantation to 12 weeks.
This decision not only invalidates the rules that were discussed, but also establishes a “mandatory criterion for all judges in the country,” explained then the Minister President, Arturo Zaldívar.

So far, there are seven entities where Legal Interruption of Pregnancy (ILE) is allowed: Colima, Mexico City, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Baja California and Sinaloa.
In addition, the call for the ‘March for Life’ happens a few days before the 15th anniversary of the decriminalization of abortion in Mexico City, a precursor entity in this movement.
On April 24, 2007, the Legislative Assembly of the then so-called Federal District approved by a large majority the amendment to the Criminal Code and the Health Law, thereby decriminalizing abortion up to three months of gestation. This took effect two days later.
