Europe Europe presents “A Moment of Love”, an adaptation of the successful novel “Mal de Pierres” by the Italian Milena Agus.
The film is characterized by the beauty of its realization and the protagonist of Marion Cotillard. Actress and director Nicole Garcia moves the action from Sardinia, where the book takes place, to a region of western France in the early 1950s.
Shot as a luxurious romantic melodrama, the filmmaker claimed that this film is her own “Gone with the Wind”. Received with some qualms at the Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d’Or, the film later deserved 8 nominations for the César Awards, among which were best film, director and leading actress.
In the mid-twentieth century, Gabrielle (Marion Cotillard) a dreamy and romantic young woman finds herself trapped in an arranged and loveless marriage with a Spanish rural worker who fled Francoism, José (Alex Brandemühl, Mengele in “Wakolda”).
When he travels to a resort in the Alps for kidney stones, he meets André Sauvage (Louis Garrel, from Bertolucci’s “Dreamers”), a lieutenant wounded in the Indochina War. He awakens in her the urgent feeling of loving, but her recovery will mean returning to a life she never chose.
