Mobility: Boric announces rail expansion plan that includes Santiago-Valparaíso train

The “National Railway Development Plan” appears as one of the central pillars in the mobility strategy that the government intends to promote. This was confirmed by President Gabriel Boric in his public account before Congress, who also committed to the materialization of an old desire in terms of transport: the expansion of the railway network, which includes the construction of a line that reunites Santiago and Gran Valparaíso.
“This Plan contemplates deploying urban and suburban passenger services, and gradually advancing in the construction of interregional passenger services over medium and long distances. It also contemplates new infrastructure for cargo services and raises the standard of quality in its current operations,” said President Boric in his speech.
The objective of his government, according to the President himself, is to triple the number of passengers, “going from 50 million people transported by train in 2019 to 150 million passengers in 2026.”
Likewise, Boric said in his speech, clarifying that the time for the diagnoses is behind us: “From this port city, I announce that we have already begun to work to make the train that will link Valparaíso and Santiago a reality.”
“We are convinced that these advances will make a substantive difference in the quality of people’s lives and enable the country’s progress to the inclusive development we seek. Chile deserves to recover its railway tradition!” he added.
In a broader perspective on mobility, the president pointed to strong investment in public transport and infrastructure for sustainable means. In that line, he said that “we have proposed to prioritize progress in this area that allows us to have a dense network of inclusive and sustainable public transport at the end of my mandate.”
“To address that challenge, we will promote rail development, electromobility in urban and interurban transport, improve thousands of kilometers of road infrastructure that supports public transport in regions, improve infrastructure at airports, continue with the extension of the metro and build hundreds of kilometers of bicycle paths, in addition to pedestrian paths throughout the country.” the President said in his speech to Congress.
