City launched a serious accusation against Nation for overcrowding in Buenos Aires police stations

The Government of the City of Buenos Aires launched a serious accusation against the national Government, regarding the overcrowding in the Buenos Aires police stations. Everything was triggered by the escape of four people – two have already been recaptured – from a police station in Chacarita. The conflict is not new. The administration led by Horacio Rodríguez Larreta denounces that the Federal Penitentiary Service (SPF), which depends on the Executive Power, does not receive detainees from the City, so they must be housed in police stations “that are not prepared or have the function of receiving prisoners.” Buenos Aires Security Minister Marcelo D’Alessandro said that behind the decision lies the intention to harm the Federal Capital and revealed a conversation he had with María Laura Garrigós de Rébori, the SPF’s intervener. “He told me: ‘The problem you have is the criminal policy you carry out, if you stop detaining, you will not have problems with the detainees in the police stations,'” he said. “It’s outrageous,” the official said. We do not have showers, we do not have conditions for them to receive their lawyers, we do not even have the necessary caloric foods to supply them,” the minister said, speaking to Radio Mitre. And he warned: “There are 1500 police officers who, instead of taking care of the neighbors in the streets, are in the police stations taking care of prisoners and they were not trained for that.”
