Recovery of Barrio Meiggs: Mayor Irací Hassler announces public-private partnership

The mayor of Santiago, Irací Hassler, reviewed the intervention of the municipality in the Meiggs neighborhood, with the aim of combating street trade in the sector. In this regard, he announced a public-private partnership.
“We have generated a first intervention among the municipal prevention and community security teams, together with Carabineros, who have been working in three daily shifts to recover the space,” the mayor told El Mercurio. He also indicated that the PDI has had “important results,” such as the “seizure of counterfeit jewelry and other products that enter the country irregularly.”
The mayor announced a second stage of the work, linked to investment. “We set up a public-private partnership with different tenants, entrepreneurs, businessmen, including strongly the Chinese community, which has a high presence in the neighborhood, to carry out a process of urban transformation,” he told the aforementioned media.
The changes include greater lighting, order, beautification of spaces and painting of facades. Subsequently, kiosks will be installed, with the aim that there is no space left for the installation of street trade.
On the possibility of this type of trade being transferred to other sectors of the city, he pointed out that the Metropolitan Presidential Delegation is working on a plan to address the problem.
