Mexico: for López Obrador it is “a decisive day” for the rescue of trapped miners

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, reflected that it is a “decisive day” to rescue the 10 miners trapped since last Wednesday. The accident occurred when, while digging, workers came across an adjoining area filled with water that flooded the mine when it collapsed. Only five miners managed to get out and were taken to a hospital, of which two were discharged.” Today (Saturday) is a decisive day because, according to the technicians, it will be known if there is a possibility that the divers enter without risk,” the president wrote on Twitter. To free the workers “the main problem is the flooding, although the pumping equipment is sufficient and of the greatest capacity,” he added. At this time, the work is focused on reducing the water levels in the mine, tens of meters deep, to allow the entry of rescuers. According to the spokesman of the country’s presidency, Jesús Ramírez, to AFP, some 383 people, including the military and civilians, work “without rest” in the collapsed mine, located in the town of Agujita (state of Coahuila, northeast). The mine is located about 1,130 km north of Mexico City, in the so-called Coahuila coal region.
