To appoint Leticia Ramírez is to deliver the SEP to the CNTE: Elba Esther Gordillo

The appointment of Leticia Ramírez as the new head of the Ministry of Public Education is to deliver the SEP to the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE), said the former leader of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), Elba Esther Gordillo.
He warned that putting politics above education is regrettable; he said that it must go beyond ideological issues.
“Telling the CNTE there is the SEP, and all the merit is to receive citizen demands, and away from what is happening in education. What a pity!” he said in an interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva, on Radio Fórmula.

He pointed out that he understands very well the political commitments of the president and that, he recognizes his appreciation of loyalty, commitment, his convictions, “but Mexico is much more than that, we must reconcile the country and through education passes democracy, justice and equity … it is a pity that these issues are prioritized.”
“We have always wanted a teacher to come to the SEP with a long academic career, committed to quality education, to achieve justice for teachers and society as a whole. Once we see that that is not the priority, the priority is politics over education and I think it is very regrettable,” he said.

Gordillo pointed out that now that Ramírez is in the SEP, he must comply with union democracy, more salary and social recognition for teachers.
“Let children, young people, everyone be a priority to raise the quality of education … Education goes beyond ideological things, that’s why secular education; it goes beyond group interests, beyond everything. In all sincerity and trying to honor a struggle,” he said.
He pointed out that it was an opportunity and that everyone had the right to doubt. He asked to be alert so that it is fulfilled.
The former union leader criticizes actions such as the elimination of the full-time school program and the education that was taught during the COVID pandemic.
Leticia Ramírez arrives at the SEP
On Monday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador appointed Leticia Ramírez as the new head of the SEP, in relief of Delfina Gómez, future candidate for governor of the State of Mexico for Morena.
The new head of the SEP worked as a teacher for more than 12 years in public schools in the western area of Mexico City.
In addition, it is detailed that he was part of the first Democratic Magisterial Executive Committee, in the Secretariat of Organization of Section 9 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE) in Mexico City.
Leticia Ramírez Amaya was general director of Citizen Attention of the Presidency of the Republic; there he was in charge of receiving and responding to requests and demands of inhabitants throughout the country. That same responsibility was held while President López Obrador was at the head of the government of Mexico City (2000-2005).
